ANAHEIM -- The Blue Jays lost not one, but two, starting pitchers on Saturday afternoon as Aaron Sanchez and Jaime Garcia were placed on the 10-day disabled list.
Sanchez hit the DL with a contusion on his right index finger, while Garcia is dealing with a "tender" shoulder. As expected, right-hander Marcus Stroman was activated from the DL and started Saturday night vs. the Angels, and lefty Tim Mayza also was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.
The news on Sanchez hardly comes as a surprise after the 25-year-old was forced to leave Thursday's start after one inning because of the injury. Garcia's ailment was less expected, as just a couple of days before Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said despite his prolonged struggles the veteran lefty was not dealing with an injury.
"I don't even worry about it anymore," Gibbons said when asked about Toronto's slew of injuries. "Truthfully, you can't. You just deal with it."

The injuries mean that right-hander Sam Gaviglio will remain in Toronto's rotation, and will start Sunday's series finale against Los Angeles. Gaviglio had been considered a candidate to be sent to the bullpen after a six-start run with the Blue Jays, but the latest roster moves mean that he will stay right where he is, for now.
The Blue Jays will need another starter for Tuesday's game in Houston, but they have yet to reveal who that will be. Reliever Joe Biagini is a candidate to transition back to the starting rotation, while it's also possible that Toronto will consider promoting one of its prospects from the Minor Leagues.
Lefty Ryan Borucki, who is ranked Toronto's No. 8 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is tentatively scheduled to start for Buffalo on Sunday, but he could have his outing pushed back a couple of days and join the Blue Jays instead. Borucki has been on a strong run for the Bisons with a 3.27 ERA over 13 starts, which includes a scoreless seven-inning appearance during his last outing.
Right-hander Chris Rowley does not appear to be an option because he started for Buffalo on Friday night, and the only way he could be available on Tuesday is by pitching on three days' rest. Jordan Romano also appears to be an unlikely candidate because he is considered to be behind Borucki in his overall development, and the Blue Jays would like to see him spend more time in the Minor Leagues.
Either way, Gibbons was in no mood to tip his hand to a group of reporters on Saturday afternoon about his future plans for the starting five.
"We won't be short for the next couple of days," Gibbons said. "We just put two guys on the DL, can't we worry about today?"
Sanchez sustained the contusion away from the field prior to his start on Thursday against the Angels. He declined to say how the injury happened, but it forced his removal after just one inning during that start against Los Angeles, during which he allowed two runs.
The native of California made just eight starts in 2017 because of a lingering blister on his right middle finger. This injury is different, as Sanchez somehow jammed his finger, which created a lot of swelling. In 15 starts this season, Sanchez is 3-5 with a 4.52 ERA and 1.51 WHIP.
"It just kind of hurt to grip," Sanchez said after his last start. "It was right on that middle knuckle. More and more I threw, limited motion, through that gripping range and there was no way I could have made it out there. I'm not going to go out there, if it messes something else up, it's not worth it. It [stinks] for me because I felt like I was kind of getting into my own and making strides in the right direction, and then, bang. One of those freak things. [Stuff] happens and I just have to move on."
