Blue Jays come to terms with No. 5 pick Martin

July 3rd, 2020

The Blue Jays have agreed to terms with first-round Draft pick Austin Martin, according to a report by Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae. Toronto has not confirmed the agreement, and the terms of the potential deal are unknown.

Martin, the fifth overall pick, starred at shortstop for Vanderbilt and was projected by several outlets to be a top-two selection before falling to the No. 5 spot. He was rated the No. 2 Draft prospect by MLB Pipeline, who labeled him the best pure hitter in this year’s class. The 21-year-old is known for having an advanced command of the strike zone and for using the entire field with the bat, while also possessing quick feet and the arm strength to handle nearly any position on the infield. He played multiple positions across the infield and outfield at Vanderbilt.

Martin’s addition figures to bolster a young positional core that already boasts young sluggers Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio.
