Bautista in AL All-Star mix after latest voting update

TORONTO -- Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista is currently on the outside looking in, but he still remains very much in contention for the 2013 All-Star Game in New York.

Bautista currently sits fifth in fan voting for American League squad after the second round of ballot updates were released on Saturday night. He needs to finish third or higher to guarantee his spot on the roster, but Bautista currently trails Adam Jones, Mike Trout, Torii Hunter and Nick Markakis.

The 32-year-old Bautista is in search of his fourth consecutive appearance at the Midsummer Classic. He finished Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Rangers with a .254 average, 12 homers and 30 RBIs in 54 games this season.

The Dominican native was recently named the Blue Jays' Player of the Month for May, as he overcame somewhat of a slow start to the season. Bautista posted a .337 average, five homers and an impressive .994 OPS in the month. Bautista has struggled since that time though, with just three hits during the first week of June.

Bautista currently has 1,021,813 votes, while Jones is ranked first with 1,944,450. Last year, Bautista participated in his first Home Run Derby during the All-Star festivities and eventually lost to a hard-fought final round to Detroit's Prince Fielder.

Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion is also in contention for the starting job at designated hitter. He is ranked fourth after the second ballot with a total of 551,942 votes. Boston veteran David Ortiz is ranked first with a commanding lead and a total of 1,716,410 votes.

Encarnacion has the team lead in homers with 17, while also posting 50 RBIs and a .263 average. He is still looking for his first appearance at an All-Star Game.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- online or via a mobile device -- using the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot until Thursday, July 4, at 8:59 p.m. PT.

Fans may submit 25 online ballots during the voting period but can also earn a one-time bonus of 10 additional online ballots. To access these additional online ballots, fans must be logged into an MLB.com account when submitting any online ballot. Fans can also once again participate in the Home Run Derby Fan Poll. Fans will have the opportunity to select three players in each league whom they would most like to see participate in the Home Run Derby. The 2013 Home Run Derby -- part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day -- will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio in the United States beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Monday, July 15.

The 2013 American League and National League All-Star teams will be unveiled on Sunday, July 7, on the 2013 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show, televised nationally on TBS. Baseball fans around the world will then be able to select the final player on each team via the All-Star Game Final Vote sponsored by freecreditscore.com on MLB.com.

And the voting doesn't end there. The final phase of All-Star Game voting will again have fans participating in the official voting for the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com via the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.
