Donaldson could miss 2-3 weeks with calf strain

February 19th, 2017

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson says he could miss two to three weeks of Spring Training due to a right calf strain he sustained on Friday.
Addressing reporters for the first time, Donaldson said he had been feeling "phenomenal" in prior workouts, but he felt something grab in his muscle while running sprints. The three-time All-Star was walking with the assistance of crutches in the clubhouse on Sunday to take pressure off his leg, and he expects to remain on them for a few days.
"It's something that we don't necessarily want to push too much, just for the simple fact that we have a little extra time with Spring Training right now," Donaldson said. "I'm just making sure that whenever I step back on the field, it's ready to go and I'm ready to be able to push it."

Donaldson, the 2015 American League Most Valuable Player, indicated that he dealt with unrelated flareups in his left calf throughout the '16 season, but he played through them without any limitations. He batted .284 with 37 home runs and 99 RBIs en route to his second straight AL Silver Slugger Award for third basemen.
Though Donaldson is optimistic that this injury will not be a lingering issue, he said "it would be tough" to play through in games. He plans to continue undergoing daily treatment with Toronto's medical staff to help reduce the swelling and, eventually, garner enough mobility in his leg to resume weight bearing and other exercises.
"Until the other day, I felt amazing," Donaldson said. "I was chomping at the bit to be out here. Now this is just a minor little setback, and we'll move on."

Martin returns
After being excused from Saturday's first full-squad workout because of a fever, catcher returned to camp feeling much better. Martin resumed workouts at the team's training complex, and he even played a light game of soccer with teammate in the outfield at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium during the afternoon.
