BOSTON -- Rookie infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was placed on the seven-day concussion DL Sunday morning following a violent collision at first base with Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez during Saturday's loss to Boston at Fenway Park.
Gurriel was accidentally kicked on the side of his head while sliding head-first into the bag. He was examined on the field, but the Blue Jays' training staff did not discover any early symptoms, and he was permitted to keep playing. Toronto head trainer Nikki Huffman said Gurriel was monitored following the conclusion of each inning during the game, and there were no signs of a concussion.

That changed after the game, when Gurriel returned to the clubhouse and informed the club that he had a severe headache and was feeling nauseous. He went through concussion protocol and will now be out for at least the next week. The Blue Jays made a point of saying "concussion symptoms can regularly present themselves up to 24 hours after an injury that otherwise may seem benign."
"Typical concussion progression always goes: no symptoms at rest, no symptoms at cardiovascular activity, and then no symptoms with baseball," Huffman said. "The seven-day DL is there because it allows them to get through that in a reasonable time, but [Gurriel's] health is the priority. So if he takes a little bit longer, that's what we take. As early as seven days."
Tepera and Garcia return
The Blue Jays activated right-hander Dennis Tepera and lefty Jaime Garcia from the 10-day DL on Sunday morning. The two pitchers took the spots of Gurriel and Kevin Pillar, who is out at least four to six weeks with sternoclavicular sprain he sustained during a diving catch in Saturday's game. The moves leave Toronto with an 11-man bullpen a two-man bench.

Out since June 27 with right elbow inflammation, Tepera was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon. He drove to Portland, Maine, on Saturday night. and was scheduled to pitch for the Fisher Cats the following day. He instead got a late phone call to return to the Blue Jays because Toronto was short on rested arms.
Garcia had been out since June 19 with a tender left shoulder. After posting a 6.16 ERA in 13 starts Garcia will now pitch out of the bullpen, something he has not done since his rookie season in 2008.
Injury updates
• Right-hander Aaron Sanchez (right middle finger contusion) will travel to Dunedin, Fla., for the All-Star break to continue his throwing progression at Toronto's Minor League complex. Sanchez has been out since June 21.
• Right-hander Danny Barnes (left knee tendinitis) is scheduled to throw live batting practice this week. He will then be re-evaluated for the next step. Barnes also has been out since June 21.
