Atlanta Braves Executive Vice President and General Manager Alex Anthopoulos announced Tuesday that the Braves have agreed to terms with catcher Tyler Flowers on a one-year $4M contract for the 2019 season, with a $6M club option for the 2020 season.
Flowers, 32, is in his third campaign with the Braves this season after signing a two-year contract (with a club option for a third season) in December 2015. The Atlanta native has played 243 of his 674 career games for the Braves, compiling a .264 batting average with 25 home runs and 110 RBI. He owns a 3.70 catchers ERA in 61 games this season, and he posted a career-high .281 batting average in 2017.
Originally signed by the Braves as a 33rd-round draft pick in 2005, Flowers was traded to the Chicago White Sox organization in 2008 before making his Major League debut with the White Sox in 2009. He played parts of seven seasons with the Sox before coming to Atlanta as a free agent.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder was born in Roswell, Ga., and still resides in the Atlanta area. He is a graduate of Blessed Trinity High School and attended Chipola (Fla.) Junior College.
