McCann absolutely rakes in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- Braves catcher Brian McCann is part of a skilled subset of Major Leaguers: hitters who thrive at Oracle Park.

Though the park’s name has changed, its pitcher-friendly reputation has remained intact. That’s meaningless to McCann, the seven-time All-Star who insisted that he had no idea about the impressive numbers he had accumulated by the bay.

In 26 regular-season games here entering Wednesday night’s encounter against San Francisco, McCann compiled a slash line of .312/.369/.505. That’s garnished by four home runs, 18 RBIs and nine walks. His batting average, slugging percentage and OPS (.874) each ranked among the top 30 players all-time throughout the ballpark’s history -- Giants included.

McCann, who began Wednesday with a .263 career batting average, theorized that he has benefited from fortunate timing when he steps in San Francisco’s batter’s box.

“I just think it’s one of those things where I’m swinging the bat well when I come here,” McCann said. “There are hitters’ parks I don’t do well in.”

The most extreme example of this is McCann’s .224 batting average at Houston’s Minute Maid Park.

McCann did retain specific memories of a two-run, first-inning homer that he hit off Giants ace Tim Lincecum on April 11, 2010, during a rainy Sunday afternoon in San Francisco.

“I remember that the wind was howling straight in,” McCann said.
