ATLANTA -- Julio Teheran experienced the rarity of notching four strikeouts in one inning Tuesday night at Turner Field. Unfortunately for the Braves hurler, he was also reintroduced to the all-too-familiar frustration as many of his strong efforts over the past month have gone unrewarded.
Teheran recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed just one run over seven innings, providing further reason to believe he has regained the successful form that he routinely displayed in 2013 and '14. But his effort was not enough to prevent the Braves from falling to 2-18 at a home with a 2-1 loss that was decided when Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett singled off Bud Norris in the eighth inning.
"He threw seven really, really strong innings," Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said. "I'd just like to see him get rewarded for it."
Despite producing a 2.57 ERA through his first 10 starts and a dazzling 1.17 ERA over his past seven, Teheran, who has lacked run support, has just one win to show for his efforts.
"I've got all of my confidence now," Teheran said. "I feel like everything is going the right way and the way I want it to do. It's good when you feel like that."
Teheran highlighted this latest effort when he became the second Major League pitcher this season (joining Minnesota's Tyler Duffey) to record four strikeouts in one inning and the fifth to do so since the start of the 2015 season. Just four previous Braves pitchers had done this, with the most recent being Craig Kimbrel in 2012.
Benefiting from a lively fastball that touched 93 mph a few times, an effective changeup and his reliable slider, Teheran struck out each of the first three batters he faced in the second inning, but the inning was extended when his 2-2 slider eluded Kirk Nieuwenhuis' bat and catcher Tyler Flowers, resulting in a wild pitch that allowed Nieuwenhuis to reach first base.

After the inning was extended, Teheran surrendered a single to Aaron Hill and then made Ramon Flores his fourth strikeout victim of the inning. He then recorded three strikeouts in a perfect third inning, giving him seven strikeouts within a span of eight at-bats. He had recorded as many as seven strikeouts in just two of his previous nine starts this season.

"The way the ball comes out of his hand is very crisp, regardless of what the radar gun says," Braves infielder Kelly Johnson said. "The way the changeup comes out, too, makes the fastball play up 4-5 miles per hour, I'm guessing, because that's the kind of swings and takes guys are taking on his fastball. Plus, he's throwing on the corners pretty consistently."
