Three Things to Know: Brewers vs. Giants

August 5th, 2021

Coming off their fourth consecutive series win, the Brewers have a big test in front of them.

This weekend, they’ll host the San Francisco Giants – currently the top team in the National League – in a three-game showdown of first-place teams.

Here are three things to know about the Giants before the series begins.

1. Kris Bryant’s Woes at American Family Field

Sitting just a few games above the Dodgers and Padres, the Giants made a big move by trading for Bryant at the deadline. The former Cub and MVP has already shown flashes for San Francisco, homering in his first game as a Giant on Saturday.

But believe or not, Bryant has a track record of struggling at American Family Field.

Over 51 games in Milwaukee, Bryant owns just a .722 OPS -- compared to his career .885 mark. He’s hit just six homers and driven in 22 runs in those games played at American Family Field. His .241 batting average at the ballpark is his second lowest mark of any stadium besides Busch Stadium in St. Louis (.215).

It will be key for the Brewers and their elite run prevention unit to continue to keep Bryant’s numbers down this weekend.

2. Jake McGee – Reigning NL Reliever of the Month

Like the Brewers, the Giants boast an excellent back end of their bullpen – including closer Jake McGee. The Giants reliever was named NL Reliever of the Month for July, tossing 11 scoreless innings while picking up seven saves.

On the season, McGee has 23 saves in 46 appearances and owns a 2.23 ERA. Along with Tyler Rogers, he forms a formidable one-two punch in the late innings -- Rogers has a 1.98 ERA and 11 saves this season.

McGee does have some metrics that indicate his numbers are better than his actual performance. His FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) and xFIP (Expected Fielding Independent Pitching) are both considerably higher than his ERA, with the FIP at 3.04 and xFIP at 3.79.

Still, the Giants have the top record in baseball, and these two relievers are a big reason why.

3. The Brewers Bullpen

With Josh Hader on the Injured List (COViD), things will be shuffled a bit in the Brewers bullpen.

Devin Williams will likely get the save opportunities while Brad Boxberger will also factor into the high-leverage role that he’s enjoyed all season. After that, it’s a little murky.

With Jake Cousins also out due to COVID, the Brewers will likely turn to newly acquired Daniel Norris and John Curtiss in critical spots. Miguel Sanchez has also pitched well, giving up four runs in 16.2 innings (2.16 ERA). Of course, both yesterday and Monday, it was LHP Brent Suter that was called upon for crucial innings in wins against the Pirates. Suter has not given up an earned run in his last nine appearances.

Look for the Brewers to mix and match in the middle innings to try to get the ball to Boxberger and Williams with a lead this weekend.
