Segura 'fine,' but sits out Sunday

DENVER -- All-Star shortstop Jean Segura was out of the Brewers' lineup on Sunday, as expected, but he did not need X-rays on the right forearm injury that forced his early exit from the previous night's game.

Segura was struck on the arm by a ball as he swung on an offering from Collin McHugh in the fourth inning on Saturday, and he left the game two innings later after his forearm tightened up.

"He's fine, but I thought about giving him a day [off] somewhere in here," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "Today I think worked out well. I really didn't even need to go in and inquire about how he was. I think it's good for him to have a day, and we may do another one."

The Brewers begin a four-game series at Chicago's Wrigley Field on Monday, including a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Segura leads the Brewers with a .315 average, 57 runs scored and 31 stolen bases. He ranks fourth on the team with six hit by pitches -- a high percentage of which seem to be striking Segura in the hand, wrist or arm.

"It's because he doesn't get out of the way," Roenicke said. "[Carlos] Gomez is the same way. They start their swing -- and I've told them both, on that pitch that's inside, it's not a good pitch to want to swing at. To be able to hit that pitch, you've got to open up early, and it hurts you from all the other stuff. It's really a pitch that, until you get to two strikes, you really shouldn't worry about."

Easier said than done.

"You look at the best hitters in the league, and the best hitters do not hit inside fastballs," Roenicke said. "You can't just keep throwing it there every time, because they're good enough, and they'll cheat and they'll hurt you, but all the good hitters in the game, that's where you have to get them out, is inside [off the plate]. The guys who are really good at it, they don't swing at that."
