Segura in third as All-Star vote enters home stretch
Breakout shortstop, Braun need plenty of help from fans to start at Citi
WASHINGTON -- The Brewers' All-Star Game hopefuls, led by shortstop Jean Segura, still trailed at their positions as the fan balloting period wound down this week.
Segura remained third among National League shortstops in the final balloting update released by Major League Baseball on Tuesday. Injured Rockies star Troy Tulowitzki continued to lead, with 4,072,834 votes, followed by the Giants' Brandon Crawford with 2,383,248 votes and Segura with 2,072,083 votes.
The only other Brewers among the leaders at their position were outfielders Ryan Braun (eighth with 2,331,774 votes) and Carlos Gomez (12th with 1,746,318 votes).
The 23-year-old Segura, one of only two Major Leaguers with 10 or more home runs and 20 or more stolen bases (the Angels' Mike Trout is the other), probably has the best chance to represent the Brewers' at Citi Field next month. His fate could rest with the players' ballot, which the Brewers filled out during their weekend series in Pittsburgh. In the event an elected starter is injured, the player ballot determines his replacement.
Most players took it seriously, reliever Jim Henderson said.
"Especially because we have a couple of guys on our team -- [Segura] and Gomez -- who could be helped by it," Henderson said. "It was my first time doing it, and it was pretty neat to see all the names on there and get to vote for players who are deserving to go."
While those ballots are tallied, fans still have time to register their own selections. Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- online or via a mobile device -- using the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot until Thursday, July 4, at 10:59 p.m. CT.
Fans may submit 25 online ballots during the voting period but can also earn a one-time bonus of 10 additional online ballots. To access these additional online ballots, fans must be logged into an MLB.com account when submitting any online ballot. Fans can also once again participate in the Home Run Derby Fan Poll. Fans will have the opportunity to select three players in each league whom they would most like to see participate in the Home Run Derby. The 2013 Home Run Derby -- part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day -- will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio in the United States beginning at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, July 15.
And the voting doesn't end there. The final phase of All-Star Game voting will again have fans participating in the official voting for the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com via the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.
