Brewers to make three selections on first day of 2012 MLB Draft

Brewers Own First Round Picks #27 and #28 and Compensatory First Round Pick #38

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Milwaukee Brewers will make the 27th and 28th overall selections in the first round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft in addition to the 38th selection (compensatory first round pick). All three selections will be made on the first day of the MLB Draft, which begins on Monday, June 4 at 6 p.m. CT, and spans three days of activity, from June 4-6.

The Draft will take place at the MLB Network Studio 42 in Secaucus, New Jersey and draft coverage will begin live on MLB Network and MLB.com at 6 p.m. CT on Monday. The Brewers’ first three selections will take place at approximately 8:37 p.m. CT, 8:43 p.m. CT and 9:15 p.m. CT. Milwaukee received the 27th and 38th selections as a result of the Detroit Tigers signing first baseman Prince Fielder via free agency.

With three of the first 38 selections, the Brewers, Cardinals and Red Sox are the only teams with that many selections within the first 38 picks. The Brewers are one of four teams to have two first round picks, joining the Blue Jays (17th and 22nd), Cardinals (19th and 23rd) and Red Sox (24th and 31st). Last year, the Brewers also had two first-round picks and selected RHP Taylor Jungmann from the University of Texas (12th overall) and LHP Jed Bradley out of Georgia Tech University (15th overall).

Representing the Brewers at the MLB Network Studio will be former Brewer Don Money, who works in the Brewers Minor League system as Special Instructor, Player Development and Coach with the Rookie Helena Brewers. He will be joined by Brewers Manager of Administration for Player Development Mark Mueller.

The Brewers have never previously owned the 27th or 28th overall selections. Notable players chosen 27th overall include former Brewer RHP Mike Fetters by the California Angels in 1986, RHP Pete Harnisch by Baltimore in 1987, RHP Todd Jones by Houston in 1989 and RHP Rick Porcello by Detroit in 2007. Players chosen with the 28th overall selection include former Brewer RHP Jamey Wright by Colorado in 1993, INF Michael Barrett by Montreal in 1995, OF Colby Rasmus by St. Louis in 2005 and RHP Daniel Bard by Boston in 2006.

The selection rotation is determined by the clubs’ reverse order of finish at the close of the previous championship season. The Draft, which is comprised of 40 rounds, will continue on Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT for Rounds 2-15. The Draft will resume on Wednesday for Rounds 16-40 at 11 a.m. CT and will continue through its conclusion (ending approximately at 4 p.m.). The order selection for the MLB Draft is attached.
