"Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative Day" scheduled for tonight at Miller Park

The Milwaukee Brewers and Brewers Community Foundation will host Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative Day at Miller Park tonight. This unique program is a tie-in with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett’s Fatherhood Initiative and is aimed at bringing together the past, present and future by raising awareness about the importance of involved, responsible and committed fathers.

The purpose is to reinforce the importance of parenting, and reward individuals who have committed to strengthening their own family ties. Tonight, a group of 15 fathers and 15 children will participate in Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative Day, recognizing those who have made strides through this initiative to become more involved in the lives of their children.

Upon arrival at Miller Park, the group will watch the Brewers take batting practice on the field with special guest appearances from Brewers players. Attendees will enjoy the Brewers vs. Cardinals game in a luxury party suite, filled with complimentary food and beverages. T-shirts and gift bags filled with Brewers memorabilia will also be provided for each father and child, along with a scoreboard message to welcome the group.

In addition, each father will be entered in a random drawing for the chance to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game. One lucky child will also have the opportunity to be the Jr. Announcer.

The group of fathers {and their children} has been selected from various groups throughout Milwaukee and are actual members of the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative (MFI).  The individuals were nominated – and ultimately selected – because they have demonstrated a significant heightening of their commitment to fatherhood since becoming members of Mayor Barrett’s MFI.

The MFI evolved from a two-day training session held in October 2005.  The session was conducted by staff from the Maryland-based National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) at the request of Mayor Barrett to begin addressing the issue of father absence.  Of all the social problems facing America today, the widespread absence of fathers from the lives of children is by far the most socially consequential and costly.  The cumulative costs of father absence directly associated with areas like:  criminal justice, remedial education, family courts and other family related services, account for huge portions of municipal budgets – across America – resulting in dramatically higher taxes, urban flight and other problems.

A sub-committee emerged out of the initial planning session and its charge was to convene a major, city-wide, leadership summit focusing on the issue of fatherhood.  The first summit was held in October of 2006 and more than 1,200 men attended.  October 12th & 13th, 2012, will mark the 7th Anniversary Celebration of the MFI’s Annual Fatherhood Summit.
