Gomez exits with injury after breaking up DP

MILWAUKEE -- Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez did a beautiful job of breaking up a double play in Wednesday's 8-2 win against the Braves, but he paid the price.

Gomez exited with a bruised lower quadriceps on his right leg after banging into Braves shortstop Paul Janish and preventing Janish from making a strong relay throw in the second inning on a ground ball hit by Travis Ishikawa. Gomez limped off and went to the clubhouse for evaluation while rookie Logan Schafer took over in center field.

The Brewers said Gomez, who emerged in June as Milwaukee's regular center fielder, is day to day.

Gomez has a career-high 16 home runs to go with 32 stolen bases. The only other Major Leaguer with at least 15 homers and 30 steals is the Angels' Mike Trout.

The team is a bit banged up lately, with first baseman Corey Hart sidelined by a left foot injury, left fielder Ryan Braun playing through a painful right wrist and third baseman Aramis Ramirez playing with left wrist pain and a balky lower back.
