Gomez named Brewers' top defender

MILWAUKEE -- Center fielder Carlos Gomez was named the Brewers' top defender when the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Awards were unveiled on MLB Network on Sunday.

MLB Network's Ahmed Fareed and Eric Byrnes named the best defensive player on each club, plus the top defensive team (the Atlanta Braves) and the best defensive player in each league (Michael Bourn in the National League and Mike Trout in the American League). Winners were determined by the detailed statistical analysis of MLB Network's "shredder system" used by Clubhouse Confidential, plus input from Network analysts.

Gomez has long been regarded as a top-flight defensive player -- the NL's fourth-best center fielder in terms of ultimate zone rating (5.5) in 2012.

He also enjoyed a breakout year at the plate last season, batting .260 with 19 home runs, 51 RBIs and 37 stolen bases in 137 games. For now, he's penciled in as the Brewers' regular center fielder for 2013, with Logan Schafer likely to be the backup.

"Defensively, he's always going to be good," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Gomez. "On the basepaths, he's always going to be good, as long as he stays healthy. But I think at the plate, I saw some really good at-bats from him, and consistent at-bats throughout the season."

Baseball's top defenders will be back in the spotlight during this year's GIBBY Awards, which feature nominees in 21 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.

GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic and postseason moment, from's Must C highlight reels. Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
