Brewers Minor Leaguer William West was suspended for 50 games on Monday without pay after a second violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program for a drug of abuse, the Commissioner's Office announced Monday.
West, who's on the roster of the rookie-level Arizona League Brewers, will begin serving his suspension immediately. The 21-year-old left-hander, not considered a top prospect in Milwaukee's system, has recorded a 5.06 ERA in three appearances this season.
West has been playing in the Brewers organization since 2011, his first season in the Arizona League. The Tallahassee, Fla., native went 1-3 with a 3.99 ERA in 13 appearances in his first professional season.
He began last season with rookie-level Helena, then started five games for Class A Wisconsin, putting together a combined 7.30 ERA in 13 games.
