Gorzelanny knocked out after liner hits elbow

MILWAUKEE -- Brewers left-hander Tom Gorzelanny left Friday's game in the second inning after getting hit in his pitching arm by a Jayson Werth line drive.

Gorzelanny left with what the team called a bruised left elbow, but X-rays were negative.

"It's day to day, we'll see how he is tomorrow," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "Hopefully for us, obviously, he can make his next start, but I'm not sure."

Gorzelanny's injury adds more questions to a starting staff that lost Yovani Gallardo to a left hamstring strain on Tuesday.

With Donovan Hand and Gorzelanny already pulled from the bullpen to fill holes left by injury, and top prospect Tyler Thornburg already with the team to fill in for Gallardo, options seem to be limited for Roenicke.

"Well, it gets tough," the manager said. "[Marco] Estrada pitched today [for Triple-A Nashville]. It'll be on Estrada's time. But if you have to slip somebody in there, with already having Donnie Hand in there, already taking Gorzelanny out of the bullpen to put him there, Thornburg goes into your starting rotation, and it makes it very difficult to try to piece it together."

Werth, the first batter of the second inning, sent a 2-2 Gorzelanny fastball right back where it came from, and it struck the left-hander on his throwing elbow before rolling off toward the third-base line. Gorzelanny took two or three steps toward it but slowed up, looking visibly in pain.

Roenicke and trainers came out to check on Gorzelanny, but his day was done after just 13 pitches.

"It got me pretty square in the elbow and it was extremely painful right after," Gorzelanny said. "Normally, guys get hit and usually make the play and after that the pain then sets in. This was one of those things where it got me really good and I couldn't even attempt for the ball. It was very painful."

The left-hander stepped to the mound to attempt a warmup pitch to catcher Jonathan Lucroy, but when he pulled back it didn't feel right. He lobbed the ball in and immediately started toward the Brewers' dugout.

"I thought it was just one of those funny bone-type things that goes away after a little bit," Gorzelanny said. "I sat at the mound there, tried to muster up something and tried to throw it in there. I just went back and there was nothing, no feeling in there. It was not worth trying to make an effort."

Gorzelanny made his sixth start on Friday for the Brewers. He brought a 2-4 record and 2.83 ERA into Friday's action in five starts and 32 relief appearances this season.

Alfredo Figaro replaced Gorzelanny for his third appearance since a month-long stint on the disabled list with a right oblique strain.
