The Case for Willy Adames as an All-Star Shortstop

June 24th, 2022

Although was sidelined with a high ankle sprain for much of May, the shortstop has still made a serious push to stamp his name onto his first All-Star roster.

Healthy once again, Willy is back and providing his signature electricity -- and offensive production.

Here’s a look at Willy Adames’ case for a 2022 All-Star bid.

Elite Power

Proving that last season’s breakout performance wasn’t an anomaly, Adames has picked up right where he left off as power hitter through the first half of the 2022 season.

Even with time spent on the injured list, Willy Adames paces National League shortstops in home runs with 15 long balls, while also ranking first with a .284 ISO.

All signs point to Willy’s all-around numbers only skyrocketing from here, as he has logged an xSLG of .595 -- far and away the highest among National League shortstops -- and a 46.6 hard hit percentage.

Adames’ numbers speak for themselves: he’s been one of the most productive players at his position -- especially in the power department – despite missing time with an injury.

At His Best in the Big Moments

Adames is built for the big-time moments that catapult a player into All-Star territory, as he’s one of the best clutch players in MLB.

Since his arrival to Milwaukee last May, he’s stepped up his game to another level when the Brewers have needed him most. This season, Adames has slashed a scorching .364/.482/.864 in situations with two outs and runners in scoring position and an excellent .308/.379/.654 in high leverage situations, according to Baseball Reference.

Elite Defense

Adames is known for his power bat, but he’s supplied his share of highlight-worthy defensive moments as well.

With the help of his cannon for an arm, Adames sits among elite territory in several different fielding metrics, including outs above average and runs prevented, ranking third and fourth among National League shortstops, respectively.

Additionally, Adames is third at his position with a 6.1 Def rating (a statistic that measures a player’s defensive value relative to league average).

On top of voting for one of the best power hitting shortstops in all of MLB, a vote for Willy is a vote for one of the better defenders at a premium position.
