Cardinals lose challenge on Cain's infield hit

Safe ruling stands on bang-bang play at first base in seventh inning

ST. LOUIS -- In a game where offense was hard to come by, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny challenged a safe call at first base Monday night against Kansas City.

In the seventh inning at Busch Stadium, after the Royals scored the first run of the game and had a runner on first with none out, Lorenzo Cain hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Matt Carpenter. Cain was called safe at first, and Matheny challenged.

There was no evidence to overturn the call, and Cain later came around to score on Mike Moustakas' two-run double to extend the Royals' lead to 3-0.

Matheny is now 2-for-5 in replay challenges this season.
