ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals and Cubs donned sky blue on Sunday at Busch Stadium in conjunction with Major League Baseball's 2018 Father's Day effort to raise prostate cancer awareness. Part of the Prostate Cancer Foundation's effort is the annual "Home Run Challenge," where fans make single monetary donations for each home run hit by their favorite team from June 1 until Father's Day. The money goes to Prostate Cancer Foundation's research to defeat the disease and, as of Friday, The Home Run Challenge raised $1.85 million. "This is a really special cause especially if we can raise as much money as we can for something like prostate cancer," Cubs catcher Willson Contreras said. "It's also so kids out there and father's out there can watch us play today and watch us play with a lot of love and passion for the game and be proud of what we're doing today."
I'm grateful to have paternity leave so I can be home for my daughter's birth. I miss my team and it’s a big series for us, but this is a major life occurrence. I’m proud to partner with @DoveMenCare on Father’s Day to champion paternity leave #DoveMenPartner#DearFutureDadspic.twitter.com/fgtgPCyD6A
This Father's Day was timely for a couple of Cardinals players. First baseman Jose Martinez posted about the birth of his newborn daughter on Sunday afternoon and infielder Greg Garcia is celebrating his first Father's Day after welcoming a baby girl in June. "I talked to my dad today and he said, 'You know, you're never going to forget your first Father's Day," Garcia said. Both teams celebrated the day wearing the blue caps, warmup uniforms, patterned socks and cleats. Players and personnel have blue wristbands and a symbolic ribbon. Several players swung blue bats. "It's a really special day for all the fathers," Contreras said. "Thanks to them, we are able to be here today and there's a lot of really good fathers out there who really deserve this honor and we're trying to pay honor to them and thank them for what they've done for us."
