ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III said the club and its partners running Ballpark Village plan to enhance security measures in the area surrounding Busch Stadium after a man was fatally shot in the restaurant district Sunday night.
Police identified the man as Corey Hall, 38, of Florissant, Mo., and said he was one of two victims of gunfire that broke out during a rooftop party at the Budweiser Brew House, located across the street from Busch Stadium's left-field gate. Police did not identify the other victim, who was in serious condition at a hospital.
"There will be some enhancements," DeWitt told reporters at a news conference at Busch Stadium on Monday. "Some of those I'll just leave vague, because there is an element of not wanting to telegraph everything we do from a security standpoint."
DeWitt said he was "disgusted, alarmed and sad," by the events, which occurred at a private event while the Cardinals were on the road. DeWitt described the event as a type that the venue has hosted before without incident.
"It's not the type of event you would've ever thought [could happen]. There isn't any way anyone could have predicted this sort of violence would've broke out."
DeWitt said the group will consider extending the use of metal detectors for private events. Ballpark security could include enhanced screening and the use of wands to detect metal. The Cardinals return home for a seven-game homestand, beginning Tuesday against the White Sox.
"We're jumping into a homestand, and it will be business as usual and we need to be ready for that," DeWitt said. "But we've all taken a pause today to make sure we're looking really hard at everything we're doing across the street as well as what we've been doing here at Busch Stadium, and we feel really good about the fact that this is a really safe place to be on both sides and will be going forward.
"I wanted to extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families. It's tragic. Our hearts are broken and it's been a sad day around here."
The Cardinals and Cordish, the company that partnered with the club to develop Ballpark Village, released a joint statement late Sunday night. It read: "We are shocked and saddened by the senseless shooting at a private event at Ballpark Village Sunday night. There is nothing more important to us than the safety of our guests. We are praying for the victims and their families and we are working in every way possible to help the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department with their investigation, including their effort to apprehend the individual responsible. We are grateful that our security staff and the St. Louis police officers on site were able to respond quickly to help care for the victims. We are urging anyone with information about what took place to contact the St. Louis Police Department or Crime Stoppers. "
