ST. LOUIS -- Kolten Wong is day to day after fouling a ball off his right foot in the bottom of the seventh inning of Saturday night's 6-0 win over the Rockies, but the Cardinals' second baseman is confident he’ll be able to return to the lineup soon.

Wong had to leave his at-bat in the seventh because of the pain, needing help off the field, but there was no fracture revealed after imaging.

“I’ve fouled balls off my foot hundreds of times, but that was a lot of pain,” Wong said. “I’m glad no fracture, and I’ll be back in a couple of days.”

The Cardinals' medical staff drained blood out of Wong’s big toe because it had started bleeding after the foul ball hit it, and more couldn’t come out. Eventually, that will help Wong in his recovery, but he was in pain and on crutches after the game.

Despite the pain, Wong is relieved the injury didn’t turn out worse.

“I’ve taken balls off my toe hundreds of times,” Wong said. “I’ve been able to run to first base. This one, I was barely able to put pressure. The whole toe feels like it’s broken. Luckily it’s not, just one of those where it’s painful and you just got to [take a] couple of days.”

Wong has been a key part of the Cardinals' offense this year. Over his last 30 games, he’s slashing .337/.422/.463 and has been a spark since moving to the No. 2 spot in the lineup behind Dexter Fowler.

“He’s been an integral part of what we’ve done and what we continue to expect to do,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “We’re grateful and relieved that it’s not more serious, and hopefully he’ll recover quickly.”
