Cubs activate catcher Welington Castillo, catcher Eli Whiteside designated for assignment

Club selects the contract of LHP Tsuyoshi Wada, options him to Triple-A

CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs today activated catcher Welington Castillo from the 15-day disabled list. Catcher Eli Whiteside has been designated for assignment. Additionally, the club selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada and optioned him to Iowa, where he has been pitching all season. The club's 40-man roster stands at 40 players.

Castillo, 27, returns to the club after missing the last 20 days with left rib cage inflammation. He is hitting .242 (39-for-161) with eight doubles, five home runs and 21 RBI in 43 games with the Cubs this season. Castillo played two games as part of a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa and went 3-for-8 (.375) with an RBI, two walks and one stolen base.

Whiteside, 34, batted .120 (3-for-25) with one double and two RBI in eight games for the Cubs. In 33 games with Iowa this year, Whiteside is batting .171 (18-for-105) with four doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI.

Wada, 33, signed a minor league contract with the Cubs last offseason and has pitched all season at Triple-A Iowa, where he is 7-4 with a 2.81 ERA (27 ER/86.1 IP) in 14 starts this year.
