CHICAGO -- When the Cubs won the World Series four years ago, they did so with a juggernaut team that blew through the National League en route to an historic season. It was, without question, one of the best teams in franchise history, but what about in all of baseball history?

Is there one team that could be considered the greatest of all time?

MLB.com and Out of the Park Baseball 21 are joining together once again to try to answer that very question with the “Dream Bracket 2: Dream Seasons” simulation, beginning Thursday and running through June 9. The tournament will feature some of the greatest one-year teams in history in a 64-team field, featuring World Series champions, pennant winners and other clubs that fit into the what-if category.

The 2016 Cubs and 1969 Cubs will be a part of Dream Bracket 2, which includes two great teams from all 30 franchises (post World War II), plus three Negro League teams and the '94 Expos. The '84, ’89, ’98 or 2015 Cubs could have also been considered, but the ’16 team won it all and the 1969 club lives on in the hearts of Chicago fans.

This simulation comes after the first Dream Bracket created all-time dream teams for each franchise. The dream Cubs defeated the all-time Mets in the first round, but then lost to the Brewers in the second. In the championship, the all-time Yankees took down the all-time Reds in Game 7 to capture the first Dream Bracket crown.

Here is a breakdown of the Cubs’ participants in Dream Bracket 2:

1969 Cubs
Record: 92-70
Finish: Second in NL East

One of the most beloved teams in Cubs history, the 1969 squad was anchored by four Hall of Famers: Ernie Banks, Fergie Jenkins, Ron Santo and Billy Williams. Chicago was 84-52 and in first place with a five-game advantage on Sept. 2, but then experienced a late collapse. The Cubs went 8-18 down the stretch and watched the Mets claim the division crown. Nonetheless, the star-studded ’69 Cubs are remembered fondly by the team’s fan base.

Dream matchup: In the round of 64, the 1969 Cubs will be paired against the ’54 New York Giants, who swept Cleveland in the World Series. The winner of that matchup will face the winner of the ’60 Pirates and ’80 Phillies in Region 1 of the NL bracket.

2016 Cubs
Record: 103-58
Finish: First in NL Central, World Series champions

Following a 2015 season that showed the baseball world that these were not your grandparents’ Cubs, the North Siders rolled to a division title in an historic season. NL MVP Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo powered a youthful lineup, while Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks led the rotation. The Cubs were tested in the ’16 World Series by the Indians, but prevailed in a Game 7 for the ages, ending the franchise’s 108-year championship drought.

Dream matchup: In Region 2 of the Dream Bracket, the 2016 Cubs are paired with the '11 D-backs in the first round. The winner of that series will face either the 1977 Dodgers or the 2019 Nationals (last year’s World Series champs).
