Sveum ejected in second inning vs D-backs

CHICAGO -- Cubs manager Dale Sveum was ejected in the second inning of Saturday's game against the D-backs during what was his second discussion of the evening with first-base umpire Toby Basner.

With one out in the top of the second, D-backs center fielder A.J. Pollock hit a chopper to second baseman Darwin Barney, who routinely fired to first baseman Anthony Rizzo. Basner called Pollock safe. TV replays showed the ball beat Pollock to the bag, though the play was closer than it initially appeared.

Sveum came out to argue and was ejected for the second time this season.

"I was saying my piece and I was out there long enough and [crew chief Joe West] was trying to get me back to the dugout and that obviously didn't work out too good," said Sveum, who watched the remainder of the game in the clubhouse video room.

That incident marked Sveum's second run-in with Basner.

With two outs in the first inning, D-backs catcher Miguel Montero hit a hard single to Rizzo, who fielded well behind the bag. Right-hander Jeff Samardzija -- who had to get out of the way of a broken bat -- raced Montero down the line.

Samardzija received Rizzo's throw near the bag, but Basner called Montero safe, bringing out Sveum. Again, TV replays showed Samardzija beat Montero to the bag.
