Baez exits after trying to play through pain

WASHINGTON -- Shortstop was removed from the Cubs' 6-5 win over the Nationals on Sunday night before the bottom of the sixth after jamming his right heel a few innings earlier.

Baez came out of the game after manager Joe Maddon suggested he play it safe and ice the foot. Baez hopes to play on Monday and face former Cubs ace Jake Arrieta in the series opener against the Phillies at Wrigley Field.

Baez injured the foot while rushing in to make a barehanded pickup and throw on a Jeremy Hellickson grounder in the third inning. The training staff and Maddon came out to check on Baez, but he stayed in the game until Addison Russell replaced him before the Nationals came to bat in the sixth.

"I just went too hard to the ground and, you know, my heel kind of got jammed a little bit," Baez said.

Baez said the heel began hurting when he came back to the dugout, but it's only a bruise.

"I'll be playing tomorrow hopefully," he said. "I want to play tomorrow."
