Strop awaits investigation into stolen car

April 25th, 2019

CHICAGO -- Wednesday was a crazy day for Cubs reliever , and his save Wednesday night will likely be a memorable one.

Strop's car, a 2018 Genesis G90, was stolen from a parking lot prior to the 7-6 win over the Dodgers.

The Cubs reliever, who has taken over the closer role with Brandon Morrow sidelined, told ESPN late Wednesday night that he had been dealing with the situation until the fourth inning.

“I knew you were going to go there,” Strop joked with reporters prior to Thursday’s game. “I know it has nothing to do with baseball, I just treated it like that. It’s nothing involved with my game. I just did whatever I could, when I could and just tried to get ready for the game like I do every day.”

“Just hear what the police had to say and kind of find out the condition of my car. That’s what I wanted to know yesterday,” Strop continued. “The car is going to be under investigation for at least 10 days, so right now I’m like you guys. I don’t know anything.”

The reliever appeared in the ninth, earning his third save of the season after inducing a game-ending double play. Manager Joe Maddon, like many others, was unaware of the situation, but he is happy to know his closer is OK.

“I heard about it and just talked to him about it. [I didn’t know]. Not at all,” Maddon said. “If you’ve ever had a vehicle stolen, which I also have, it’s a violation, man. You don’t want the vehicle back. It’s a really bad feeling, man. It’s an awful feeling."

Return for Russell still TBD

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein reiterated that there is no timeline on Addison Russell’s situation, and the club would do what it feels is in the best interest of the team.

“We’re not getting ahead of the story. He’s day to day. He’s going to be down there for seven days and we’ll make a determination about what’s best for the organization,” Epstein told reporters before Thursday’s game. “Nothing is promised. We’re just making sure he puts in the necessary work off the field and then monitoring his baseball progression.”

Epstein added that Russell could be optioned to Triple-A Iowa after his seven-day prep there.

Maddon said Russell will “likely” play multiple positions during his stint with Triple-A Iowa. Russell is eligible to return from the restricted list on May 3 vs. St. Louis.

“As he’s down there getting ready to come back, he will likely play multiple positions. Yes,” Maddon said. “We’ll make a final determination on that once he gets ready to come back up.”

Maddon added that while Russell is capable of playing several positions, he would primarily play second base and shortstop during his prep in Iowa.

Lester activated from IL; Collins optioned

The Cubs activated starter Jon Lester from the 10-day injured list prior to his start Thursday afternoon. Lester has been sidelined since April 9 with a left hamstring strain. In a corresponding move, the team optioned left-handed reliever Tim Collins to Triple-A Iowa.

Collins posted a 2.70 ERA (one earned run in 3 1/3 innings pitched) in four relief appearances this season.
