Cubs acquire LHP Andrew Chafin from Arizona

August 31st, 2020

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin and a cash consideration from the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named or a cash consideration. To make room for Chafin on the 40-man roster, outfielder Ian Miller has been designated for assignment.

Chafin, 30, is 10-12 with a 3.68 ERA (111 ER/271.2 IP) in 337 career major league relief appearances with the Diamondbacks covering all or part of the last seven seasons (2014-20). He exceeded 70 outings in each of the last three campaigns, including a career-best 77 appearances in each of the last two years. Chafin has limited left-handed batters in a .230 batting average, .307 on-base percentage, .310 slugging percentage and .617 OPS in his career.

The southpaw is currently on the 10-day injured list due to a left finger sprain. Chafin had gone 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA (6 ER/6.2 IP) in 11 outings prior to being sidelined, striking out 10 batters in 6.2 innings pitched. In his career, Chafin has averaged more than a strikeout per inning (288 strikeouts in 271.2 IP).

Chafin was originally selected by the Diamondbacks in the first round (43rd overall) of the 2011 Draft out of Kent State University.

Miller, 28, made one pinch-running appearance with the Cubs this season.

Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster stands at 58 players, with 26 active players on the major league roster (plus three 10-day injured list players and three yet to report) in Chicago and 26 players in South Bend.
