Cubs select the contract of INF Patrick Wisdom, option INF/OF Jose Martinez to alternate site

September 25th, 2020

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of infielder Patrick Wisdom from the South Bend Alternate Site and optioned infielder/outfielder Jose Martinez to South Bend. To make room for Wisdom on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Manny Rodriguez has been recalled from Double-A Tennessee and placed on the 45-day injured list as he continues his recovery from a right bicep strain.

Wisdom, who will wear uniform number 59, will be available for the Cubs tonight when they begin their three-game series at the Chicago White Sox.

Wisdom, 29, has played parts of the last two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2018) and Texas Rangers (2019) and is a career .224 hitter (17-for-76) with four home runs and 11 RBI in 41 games. He has played first base and third base at the big league level. The right-handed batter was originally selected by St. Louis in the first/compensation round (52nd overall) of the 2012 Draft out of St. Mary’s College of California. Wisdom signed a minor league contract with the Cubs last month and was assigned to the club’s alternate site.

Martinez, 32, has gone hitless in 21 at-bats for the Cubs since being acquired from Tampa Bay on August 30.
