The Chicago Cubs teamed up with six talented local artists, designers and illustrators to bring you the Cubs Cap Artist Series presented by Budweiser.
The Cubs Cap Artist Series fuses the Cubs' iconic identity with each artist's (Amuse126, Merlot, StukOne, Elise Swopes, Chuck Anderson and Brandon Breaux) distinct style to create designs that are not only uniquely authentic to the Cubs, but also link the Cubs to the culture of Chicago.
These limited-edition caps were distributed to the first 5,000 early arriving Budweiser Bleacher adults age 21-and-older at select Friday home games as part of our 2019 Budweiser Bleacher Fridays. Details are below on the artists, cap designs and game dates.
Amuse126 is a Chicago-based artist who is among the top-tier of his generation when it comes to modern aerosol artwork. His techniques, designs and aerosol-specific effects are pushing the envelope in the modern graffiti art world. Amuse126's organic and dynamic approach to traditional graffiti lettering also crosses the boundaries into abstract fine art.
"My design is based on the standard gray and blue Chicago-style road uniform. The graffiti-influenced lettering is a nod to my roots and honors the classic bold Cubs iconic look. When a fan turns the hat over it opens up a new world into the more fine art side of my work. Free Your Mind is boldly added to the underside of the hat as a reminder to never settle and always allow yourself to think far beyond what's expected of you. My roots, passion, admiration and true pride as a Chicagoan and Cubs fan were put into this project and my hope was for a fan to feel the excitement I felt with this project to be the same feeling they get when given this hat."
Graffiti artist Merlot is a Seattle native currently based in Chicago. Merlot pushes boundaries with her bold, colorful and well-crafted style. Her diverse background in graphic design as well as a fascination with textures, patterns and fashion have instilled a fearlessness in her experimentation with color choices and flow of not just letter-forms but the entire approach and presentation. She gains inspiration from her travels as her work is heavily influenced by the exploration of new environments and ideas.
"When I moved to Chicago four years ago, I remember feeling the passion, energy and love the community has for the Cubs. It's that type of passion I have for creating artwork, and to be able to share that with the Cubs community and create something fans can enjoy is a pretty amazing feeling."
Originally from Rockford, Chicago-based painter StukOne has been a nationwide force in the graffiti scene for more than 15 years. He specializes in small- to large-scale murals, inked drawings, illustrations and typography. StukOne often pushes the limits of perception with his unique graffiti aesthetic. He is known for taking risks with bright color schemes and unique compositions combined with extremely clean lines and design elements.
"I'm super excited to be working with the Cubs this year on the Cubs Cap Artist Series. I decided to take a less conventional route with the design process and come up with something different than what fans are used to seeing on a Cubs hat in order to add a bit more flare to the headwear. I hope Cubs fans enjoy the hat as much as I enjoyed designing it."
Elise Swopes is a self-taught photographer and graphic designer that has used her business savvy to spin influencer marketing on Instagram into a full-fledged career and meld art with a message that has an ability to reach millions. As she heads into the future, she continues to innovate in the increasingly multimedia landscape of digital communication, delving into video production that fits within the format of Instagram Stories to take followers on adventures with brands like Adidas and Pandora.
"I've loved the Cubs since I was a little girl. My mom had a vintage red, white and blue cap with the iconic Cubs "C" laid across the front. I'd try to steal it regularly, but I looked forward to gamedays most because she would finally let me wear it. The sun would always be shining, and even if it wasn't, it didn't matter, because the hot dogs were covered in mustard and the peanuts were still being unshelled. The energy was unmatched and out of this world. So, inspired by my many out of this world experiences, I designed a baseball as the moon and featured the Earth on the side with the iconic Cubs imagery. Below the cap you can find the words "Keep Your Imagination Alive," simply as a reminder that our imagination can lift us all to our greatest heights. You just have to believe."
Chuck Anderson is a graphic artist, photographer and creative director. In 2003, he began his studio NoPattern with no formal education or training. Throughout the past 16 years, Chuck's work has become synonymous with vibrant color and light, surreal photography and constant experimentation combining analog and digital mediums. He has worked with Nike, Microsoft, Chicago Bulls, ESPN, Vans and many more.
"The Cubs have been a part of my life from day one. From simpler times visiting Wrigley Field as a kid, collecting Sandberg and Sosa cards and memorizing "Rookie of the Year" to watching the World Series win with family to now working with the team - these have all been integral parts of my roller-coaster experience as a fan of both the team and the brand. I wanted to create something clean and simple for the outside of the hat yet complex and heavily layered on the inside that reminded me of that lifetime of experiences. (Plus a fun nod to Clark & Addison streets with the inside lining). I'd also like to dedicate this to the memory of my wife's late grandfather, Doug Pallay, the greatest Cubs fan I ever met."
Brandon Breaux is an American artist born in Chicago. His work focuses on identity, the subconscious mind and the fragility of the human psyche. His primary medium is oil paint, occasionally using video, digital illustration, animation and fashion in his works. With the overall goal to use his art to inspire and educate, Breaux uses symbolism to tell a larger story as a way to allow the audience to engage with the work.
"My earliest memories of the Cubs are watching the games with my grandfather. I wanted to be like my grandfather, the Cubs were his favorite team so they were mine as well. Watching those games and seeing Harry sing during the 7th inning stretch is a big moment in my memory because it's some of my most fondest memories of my granddad. One of the things that stood out most when watching was that ivy wall. It's so iconic so I had to incorporate it into the design as well as my signature neon sign feel. This game and this team mean so much to Chicago so I hope the fans love this artist collaboration and that they get to make beautiful memories with their loved ones wearing the hat."
