17 years ago today, Pedro Martinez wore a Yoda mask ... for some reason

17 years ago today, Pedro Martinez wore a Yoda mask

There are a lot of holidays we should celebrate in honor of Pedro Martinez.

His nine perfect innings against the Padres on June 3, 1995 -- though he lost it in the 10th on a Bip Roberts double:

His 17-strikeout one-hitter against the Yankees on Sept. 10, 1999.

His six hitless relief innings in the ALDS on Oct. 11, 1999.

His induction into the Hall of Fame (and subsequent amazing speech) last month:

I mean, we should have daily periods of silent reflection on his 1999 and 2000 seasons -- when Pedro went 41-10 with a 1.90 ERA and 12.5 SO/9. The league average ERA in that time: 4.74.

Today, though, we celebrate something much more important. We honor the day, 17 years ago, that Pedro Martinez wore a Yoda mask in the dugout.

Pedro Yoda

That's right. That's Pedro Martinez as Yoda, or Yodro if you will, calling an out in 1998 -- a year before Episode I and Jar Jar Binks changed things forever. And thanks to the internet, this moment will live on forever ... or at least until computers become sentient and refuse to listen to reason.

Though we may never know why Pedro did it, we are just thankful that he did it.

Pedro
