A Pirates home run hit water on the fly for the first time on Sunday
PNC Park, the Pirates' stadium on the shores of the Allegheny River, opened in 2001. But unlike San Francisco's bayside AT&T Park, which opened one year earlier and has seen 91 homers get wet, reaching the river in Pittsburgh has proven a far mightier challenge.
In fact, before Sunday, only one long ball had reached the water on the fly, and it wasn't even by a Buc. It was by Houston's Daryle Ward on July 6, 2002:
On Sunday, the drought (that word seems especially appropriate here) ended. Garrett Jones became the first Pirate to send a baseball to Davy Jones' Locker. And announcer Tim Neverett dropped some relevant Talking Heads lyrics to celebrate.
