Cheering for Cubs a family affair in Arizona

He may have left the Windy City years ago, Adrian Gurrola will always be a Cubs fan.

“My family is from Chicago, so I started rooting for the Cubbies at an early age,” said the 20-year-old, who moved to Arizona in 1997. “I’ll be cheering them on everywhere I go.”

Gurrola and his family are part of the sea of blue-clad fans who make their way to Chase Field every year. The Chicago fan base travels well, especially to Phoenix. Mesa, Ariz., is the Cubs’ Spring Training home and the region is a popular snowbird destination for many Midwesterners.

Adrian brought his entire family out to Chase Field on Friday for the D-backs’ series-opening win over the Cubs, wearing his favorite piece of baseball apparel -- a Chicago Cubs serape (Mexican shawl).

“I went to Rocky Point a few years ago, and when I saw it, I knew I had to have it,” Gurrola said. “Every time I come to the ballpark I always get compliments on it.”
