The first run of the Congressional Baseball Game was scored on a wild pitch
Though the Democrats won this year's Congressional Baseball Game, 11-2, the very first run of the night was scored thanks to some heads-up baserunning from the Republican representative from Pennsylvania's 6th district, Ryan Costello.
Costello, who played in a Reading Fightin' Phils jersey, was on third base when Democratic Congressman Cedric Richmond's pitch went a little wild.
Costello was paying attention and took off for home, putting the GOP on the board early. However, they eventually lost the lead. (Yes, Richmond threw a wild pitch, but some consider him the best Congressional Baseball Game player … ever.)
After the game, the Democrats presented the trophy to their opponents in honor of House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise. From MLB.com's Alyson Footer:
