Cubs will preserve Kyle Schwarber's mammoth HR that landed on top of the Wrigley Field scoreboard

This is where Schwarber's mammoth Game 4 HR landed

Despite conventional thinking, Kyle Schwarber's mammoth Game 4 home run didn't wind up orbiting the Earth or landing on the moon or clearing an elevated highway and crash-landing in the desert to create a man-made crater. In fact, it didn't even make it onto Chicago's Sheffield Avenue.

A Tribune Publishing enterprise architect named Tom Comings was at Wrigley Field for Game 4 of the NLDS between the Cubbies and Cardinals, taking photographs of the fancy new scoreboard in right field from section 538. He snapped shots of the roof as a Harry Caray tribute video played during the seventh-inning stretch and the roof appeared empty.

Then, after the Schwarber blast, he captured this beaut:

According to the Chicago Tribune, Comings alerted the Cubs as to the location of the ball and they sent someone up there to verify. Then, they paid him a generous finder's fee in the form of a Jon Lester bobblehead and other Cubs swag. 

The Cubs verified that it is indeed Schwarber's home run ball on top of the scoreboard and told the Tribune that the team will leave the ball on top of the scoreboard in a Plexiglass case for at least the remainder of the postseason. They'll determine the ball's eternal fate after the Cubbies' run has concluded. But for now, Chicago's only concern is watching the Mets and Dodgers and waiting to learn if they'll fly to New York or LA to start the NLCS. They'll find out on Thursday in Game 5 of the NLDS at 8 p.m. ET on TBS.
