Note to all pitchers: Get in a footrace to first with Dee Gordon, and you will surely lose

Gordon slides into first to avoid tag from pitcher

People who are known for being fast: Michael Johnson. Barry Allen. Dee Gordon! They do call him "Flash," after all. He can do things like this.

People who are not known for being fast: Pitchers. You know, generally speaking.

So, when Gordon's ground ball during Friday's Marlins-Braves game required Atlanta reliever Ross Detwiler to cover first base, it went ... about as you'd expect. Warning: Baserunners in your rearview mirror are closer than they appear.

Gordon infield hit

"Don't look back," Satchel Paige famously said. "Something might be gaining on you." In this case, when Dee Gordon is involved, something will absolutely always be gaining on you, and by the time you turn around it will be too late.

We should also point out that this was the rare necessary slide into first, both because Gordon managed to avoid the tag and because he went in feet first.

Poor, poor Ross, though. There was only one way that could end, really. Like Sisyphus, he was doomed to push his boulder up the hill, only to watch as it inevitably rolled away.
