Watch 'Detroit' stars John Boyega, Algee Smith and Anthony Mackie on 'Express Written Consent'

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow's new film is Detroit, a period piece depicting the city's 12th Street Riot of 1967. In the days leading up to the film's wide release, a trio of its stars sat down with Jeremy Briesel at Comerica Park for some interview time on Express Written Consent.

John Boyega spoke with Briesel about the film's ties to the city and role in shaping its identity decades later. Boyega, who rose to prominence as Finn in 2016's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, also talked about some of his charity work as well as his as-of-now limited familiarity with baseball. Watch his interview clip atop this post.

Anthony Mackie was particularly impressed by an 88-mph slider Justin Verlander threw for a strikeout, and spends a bit of his interview time raving about it:

Algee Smith and Briesel discuss the grueling audition process and how Smith balanced the rigors of filming Detroit at the same time he played a role in BET's The New Edition Story mini-series:

Detroit hits theaters nationally on Aug. 4.
