Hellickson's Gold Glove trophy is quite a weighty honor
Rawlings has been quoted as saying that they wanted their Gold Glove trophies to be the "the heaviest in major league sports."
Mission accomplished, says Jeremy Hellickson.
The Rays righty received his award before for his outstanding glove work during the 2012 season prior to Sunday's game against the Indians at Tropicana Field.
Hellickson had watched 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner David Price raise his trophy over his head several times as the lefty was honored on the field before the game on Saturday. So when Hellickson was presented the award before the crowd of 20,000-plus at the Trop, he paused for photos before attempting to hoist it over his head. He got halfway there, then brought it back down.
"There was no way I was getting that thing over my head," Hellickson joked. "Way too heavy. I barely got it back to the clubhouse."
The trophy now sits in his locker inside the Rays clubhouse. And it will probably stay there for a while until "Helly" regains the strength to bring it home with him.
