To take home this honor, skippers need to be competitive, serious about winning and able to make tough decisions in stressful situations.. But, it's also important that they stay loose and take a dessert to the face every once in a while.
Back in June, Davey Johnson chatted candidly with media about Rays pitcher Joel Peralta having pine tar on his glove, and then joked that Stephen Strasburg thought umps were after him for the same reason. And Melvin? Well, to be honest, it was just funny seeing him hit with a pie after the A's clinched a postseason berth:
