Josh Bell stretched a single into a double using a supremely slick popup slide

Improvising on the job can be a challenge. One second, you think everything is going normally, and the next, you're forced to scramble to make something right.
Josh Bell found himself in this situation on Tuesday night in the first inning of the Pirates' 2-1 win over the Royals. He had cracked a long drive down the left-field line off Eric Skoglund that hit the wall. Nine times out of the 10, that means the hit is at least a double, and Bell had that feelling.
Unfortunately, the ball took a friendly carom right to Alex Gordon, who made a great throw in to second baseman Whit Merrifield. It looked like Bell was toast, so he deployed an incredibly nifty popup slide:

Just like that, an out was turned into a double ... and Bell looked cooler than ever in the process.
