Josh Collmenter's hamster Slider will be chilling in the D-backs clubhouse from now on

Josh Collmenter's hamster hangs out with D-backs

D-backs manager Chip Hale was recording his pregame radio show from his office when out of the corner of his eye he caught something moving.

"Something just rolled into my office when I was doing my work," Hale said. "I didn't know what was going on. I went into my bathroom and there was this hamster or something rolling around in a ball."

Meet Slider the hamster, the newest pet for D-backs pitcher Josh Collmenter. Slider apparently will now be a fixture in the clubhouse.

Collmenter purchased the hamster Monday, but letting it run around the clubhouse was problematic until Tuesday when he brought in the plastic hamster ball.

"The hamster ball was a nice addition today so now I don't have to worry about losing track of her when she's running around," he said.

Indeed, while Collmenter was talking, Slider was making her way around the clubhouse and into Hale's office.

"Thought it wouldn't be a bad thing to have something running around here, a team mascot," Collmenter said. "I mean you can't quite well have a rattlesnake running around here."

Apparently, Slider will get to see the country a bit over the last six weeks of the season as Collmenter plans to take her with him on road trips.

"That's the plan," Collmenter said. "We have to make sure it gets its passport, but once it's cleared through the FAA we'll be good to go."

Collmenter also acquired a praying mantis while the team was on its recent road trip, but he assured people it's kept in a separate cage than Slider.

Where are those cages exactly?

"A secure location," was all Collmenter would say.

Hale could only shake his head.

"I don't know what's going on," he said. "We're a big family so it's just another pet to add to the group."
