Mets launch 'Volunteer Challenge' to benefit the Rockaways
On Tuesday, three Mets pitchers took part in a meal service and supply distribution at the Action Center in Far Rockaway to launch the Mets Volunteer Challenge. Jeremy Hefner, Scott Rice and Greg Burke -- alongside New York Cares -- gave out food and other necessities to Far Rockaway residents who are still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.
"[Giving back] is very important," Hefner said. "It creates a stronger community if you can get people to sacrifice their time and energy and resource to a greater good."
The Mets Volunteer Challenge encourages fans to make a difference within their communities, rewarding participants with the chance to win tickets, scoreboard recognition and even a place an on-field ceremony at a future game.
