Pat Neshek returns to the A's with a heavy heart
It's been a tough few days for Oakland reliever Pat Neshek. His wife, Stephanee, gave birth to son Gehrig on Tuesday. Pat described that as "probably the best day I've ever had."
Tragically, Gehrig died just 23 hours later.
Stephanee encouraged Pat to rejoin the A's on Friday in Detroit, where they were preparing for their ALDS series against the Tigers. And on Saturday night, Neshek entered Game 1 at Comerica Park and got a smooth two outs, including a strikeout. As he walked off the field to close the 7th inning, he looked up and pointed to the sky to honor Gehrig.
The entire A's team has been incredibly supportive of Pat and his family, sporting "GJN" (Gehrig John Neshek) patches on their sleeves.
Earlier in the day, Stephanee tweeted the outfit she and Pat had chosen for Gehrig to wear.
This was going to be Gehrig's 1st outfit. I know he will be watching Pat and he is so proud of his daddy:) twitter.com/StephaneeNeshe…— Stephanee Neshek (@StephaneeNeshek) October 6, 2012
After the game, Game 1 starter Jarrod Parker tweeted out more support for his teammate.
