Photo of the Day: Digging through the snow for home plate

Branch Rickey, president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, uses a baseball bat as Ebbets' Field groundskeeper Matty Schwab uses a broom trying to find homeplate at the Dodgers' spring training camp in New York's Bear Mountain State Park, Jan. 28, 1943. Vice president and general manager of the Montreal Royals, John McDonald, watches the action from his seat in a toboggan. The officials staged their gag as newspapermen inspected the site. Fact: Ballparks look pretty beautiful covered in snow.
But after the majestic photos comes digging out. Alas, we're not sure how effective using a baseball bat would be -- as demonstrated by former Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey trying to dig his way to home plate at the team's Spring Training camp in upstate New York. (Ballpark toboggans, though, are definitely an effective means of transportation.)
Thankfully, grounds crews are a little more prepared nowadays.
