Throwback Photo of the Day: Dusty Baker vs. the Phanatic, Round 1
Dusty Baker is a baseball man. He made his debut with the Braves in 1968, became manager of the Giants in 1993 and was recently hired to serve as skipper of the Nationals for 2016. That's most of his life spent learning about and guiding others through the game.
The Phillie Phanatic is also a baseball ... thing. He made his debut with the Phillies in 1978 after arriving from the Galapagos Islands, and has been entertaining fans in Philadelphia ever since.
In 2016, the two lifelong baseball minds will square off in an attempt to capture the NL East crown, but it won't be the first time the two have met on the diamond. In fact, they've been doing it ever since the Phanatic's first year in the City of Brotherly Love.
The above photo was taken on Oct. 4, 1978, just before Game 1 of that year's NLCS. Baker was with the Dodgers at the time and had a pretty good game -- going 1-for-3 with two walks. Baker's Dodgers went on to defeat the Phanatic's Phillies in the game and series before falling to the Yankees in the Fall Classic.
And now, almost 40 years later, Baker and the Phanatic will take the field once again. But hey, the Phanatic hasn't aged a day!
