Poll: Best non-pitcher pitching outing in second half
The 2015 MLB season might have been the season of the position player pitcher. In the past 50 years, only three seasons saw more non-pitchers take the mound -- 2000, 2003 and 2004 -- and those were dominated by just two players: Rick Ankiel and Brooks Kieschnick. This season, 23 fielders made a total of 27 appearances and pitched 26 cumulative innings. They allowed 14 earned runs, including nine home runs, but they also struck out eight batters. And that's not counting Cliff Pennington, who became the first position player to ever pitch in the postseason.
In the second half of the season alone, Brendan Ryan pitched two straight scoreless innings, Shane Robinson revealed himself as a true knuckleballer, Ike Davis pitched to a pitcher and Ichiro Suzuki pitched -- I repeat, ICHIRO PITCHED. It was all magnificent.
And since we determined that Jeff Francoeur had the best position player pitching performance of the first half of the season, it's time to determine the second half's champion. Did Davis, who came in second in the first-half poll, give a first-place performance in August? Was Adam LaRoche's clean inning the most dominant? Was Ichiro's the best purely because of the joy it brought to the world?
