Sonny Gray tosses 103-pitch shutout, A's clinch Wild Card spot
Gray throws shutout to help A's clinch.
Heading into Game 162, the Athletics were still a win away from cementing a postseason berth. The A's have struggled a bit since the blockbuster deadline deal that sent back-to-back Home Run Derby champion and outfield assist extraordinaire to Boston for southpaw hurler Jon Lester.
Meanwhile, a dramatic 11th-inning win had the Mariners clinging to hope as they could force a one-game playoff with a win and an A's loss on Sunday ...
... then Sonny Gray happened.
Gray tossed a shutout and struck out six on his way to a 4-0 victory. What's more is he needed only 103 pitches to do it (he had thrown a very Madduxian 88 through the first eight frames).
The win propelled the A's to the postseason for the third consecutive season. To say they were pleased would be gross understatement.
With the Wild Card berth behind them, the A's can celebrate only briefly as they host the Royals on Tuesday, when they'll send Jon Lester to the hill, because postseason poetry.
