Terrence Long once robbed Manny Ramirez of a walk-off homer and changed fashion's future

Terrence Long robbed Manny Ramirez of game-winning HR

On this date in 2002, there was quite the spectacle at Fenway Park.

And no, it wasn't Billy Koch's iconic, feather-like soul patch:

Nor was it Manny Ramirez's less-than-iconic hair:

Rather, it was Athletics outfielder Terrence Long stealing all the joy from the Red Sox fans in attendance. With the Red Sox trailing, 3-2, in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ramirez came to the plate with two on and two out. He (and his buoyant yellow curls) then took Koch's 1-2 pitch deep to center field. Only problem: Terrence Long was there. Racing to make the catch, Long ended the game.

And then began the great hug wars.

Jermaine Dye got a hug. Koch got a hug. And surely, every A's fan around the globe hugged the person, persons, dogs, or even themselves if there was no one around -- a warm embrace at that very instant.

One week after the catch, the A's started their insane 20-game winning streak that propelled them to the AL West title that year. Perhaps more important, (and while we can't prove it) this robbed dinger may have ended the yellow-haired Manny. After all, here was how he reported to camp the next spring:
