The Sam Fuld Rule is born ...

With left-hander Cesar Ramos not fully warmed up to start the bottom of the eighth inning in a game against Milwaukee last June, Rays skipper Joe Maddon got creative.

The manager sent outfielder Sam Fuld -- who had pinch-hit for the previous pitcher in the top of the inning -- out to the mound. Fuld tossed a few warmups, kicked around some dirt and was promptly removed once Ramos completed his bullpen routine.

Yesterday, MLB amended Rule 3.05 to "prohibit a manager from sending his current pitcher out to warm up with no intention of having him pitch because a relief pitcher is not ready to enter the game."

Said Maddon: "Make it the Sam Fuld Rule."
