Things go rotten for Lime during Rays Citrus Race

Though it doesn't yet have the same aura as the Sausage or President versions, the Citrus Race is a fun, Florida-themed variant of the ballpark character dash and has become a staple of Rays spring games at Charlotte Sports Park. The race is a three-fruit sprint from dugout to dugout between an Orange, Lemon and Lime.

For the last four years, Port Charlotte crowds have enjoyed watching little kids dressed as fruit run as fast as they can and cheer loudly as they come down the home stretch. Except for Thursday afternoon, when the crowd gasped in unison as the Lime got squeezed on the final turn and face-planted in front of the Rays bench.

Rays third base coach Tom Foley leapt into action and brought the boy into the Rays dugout where he got high-fives from players, a pat on the back from manager Joe Maddon and a couple bags of sunflower seeds from Cy Young Award winner David Price.
